Update from Kenya

Hello from Africa!

We’ve been here for almost a month, working on four mini-documentaries for a wonderful development NGO as well as teaching a one-week workshop on creating compelling short video stories using your smartphone, and editing a film we shot last year with the Maasai people in south-central Kenya.  While here, we shot part of the first module of the Global Video Academy online course… and despite our digital audio recorder taking a plunge into a bucket of water in the Kibera slums, everything worked out just great. We can’t wait to share the entire course with you.

But, until then, here is a short update we shot in Kenya to give you a taste of what’s to come…

Joseph Sindorf is an award-winning photographer and international humanitarian filmmaker who has worked in more than seventy-five nations of the world. His work normally takes him to places where people are at their worst — in the aftermath of major natural disasters; surviving famine or drought; and suffering intense injustice. His video work has won international film festivals, the NATAS Emmy Award, the George Foster Peabody Award and many others. When he’s not taking images, his passion is teaching others to use the gear they have to shoot the best photographs or capture the best video they are capable of. He is a major proponent of using and mastering what you have until you seriously outgrow it… even if that’s just a smartphone camera. He’s taught photography and cinematography workshops in 15 nations of the world and has guest lectured at several universities. Joe is happily married. His wife. Kathleen, is a college professor. Together they have two incredible daughters who will someday change the world — or at least their part of it. He loves to find stories that matter and tell them in an engaging, visual style that compels people to take action… and train other people to do the same.
